Arantxa is so hot, temperamental and emotional, unlike the cold Steffi. It's a pity her emotions were rarely truly happy.

@Peter Zhou She was very upset by the defeat. This match is special, but it was painful to watch in most of the matches. She smiled on the court only sometimes after victories. She really smiled after rare matches in her career. Although off court, Arantxa felt like a very smiling person. On the court, she was perhaps the most emotional person. She didn’t throw the rackets, but her facial expressions were incredible. She played for a long time, because from an early age she did not see anything in life except tennis and could not imagine life without him. 2002 was the first year that she did not make it to the final and immediately left. But even in the last match, she cried and roared on the court because of the defeat. She could not take them calmly. But it's amazing how much she was a bundle of energy and an interesting character on the court, how boring she was on the outside. Banal answers in interviews, boring and colorless clothes. Her popularity suffered from this. I don't know why Sanchez was afraid to openly speak about her feelings and emotions in public. And why only 2-3 of her outfits on the court in 15 years of her career were successful and sexy

I actually think she enjoyed just competing one by one more than most of the top contenders out there, Graf and Seles included. Except for a few times against a few names, it appears that she was rather pleased with herself even in losing. If she was not enjoying the fight she would not have stayed for that long on tour even in her worst years. After the clay court season of 96' though one would see her joy shrinking by half, at least for a long while.

Poor vicario. She was up 4-2. She should have won. She gave it her all. But Graf had her all over the court and exhausted. So sad for her. She was such a relentless fighter.

I was not Steffi's fan but she is better than Serena to me. Her victories against Navratilova in Wimbledon in her teens are as amazing as Monica's victories in RG, those are just classics of women's tennis. Regarding numbers I think Sampras was better than Federer.

@Dino Mijatovic I have to disagree. Serena played Grand Slam finals against Venus (x7), Henin, Hingis, Davenport, Sharapova (x4), Azarenka (x2), Kerber (x2), Muguruza (x2) all of which are hall of fame players. She played in the most competitive and high quality era in the women’s game ever in 1999-2004ish. Jankovic and Radwanska were not her main competition in 2008-2010 as players like Henin, Clijsters, Venus, Sharapova, peak Kuznetsova and others played in this time frame. Obviously as time went on and the transition era began, she had some softer draws such as USO 2014 and AO 2017 bar the final, but so did Steffi and so did each of the Big 3 in the men’s game. You can’t win 20+ Slams without having a few soft draws. Also, Serena struggling against Kerber and Osaka has nothing to do with her not handling the new generation of players well and everything to do with the fact that she was way past her prime and retiring from pregnancy at the age of 37 while Steffi retired at 29.

@Regulus Arcturus I agree Pete's claycourt performance is a dark cloud to his records, but RF didn't win many clay tournaments either despite he had better technique on clay..he lacked confidence while Pete was avoiding RG to keep fresh for Wimbledon. His attempt at RG in 96 was definitely more memorable than RG win at RG in 2009 as Pete lost exhausted in finals to in-form Kafelnikov after overcoming several classic clay specialists whereas RG only won after notorious Soderling beating Nadal sensationally..Pete set almost all big records in Open Era before Big 3 decided to chase them..Anyway, interesting discussion and share of views..I am aware stats speak in favour of RF, but Pete was more special to me..it is my mere impression..Similarly, Serena had to many losses in her off-peaks..her deliberate avoidance of many tournaments keeping her 100 per cent for slams is legitimate unfortunately but so obvious strategy which Graf almost never used. Even though Martina N was at a sort of a decline, she was still a monster to beat, especially on grass or indoors, and even later without Seles, Graf was challenged seriously in certain semifinald and finals of GS while Serena was literally walking through faceless opposition or coming through with a shear force of will being at brink of defeats and playing ugly but screaming, punching and running enough..Impression that there was no opposition to Steff in mid 90s is false as there were a bunch of good and solid players but she was so good and she even proved her force when she faced new wave gen in 98 and 99 while Serena struggled too many times against Kerber, Osaka while during her domination between 2008 to 2010 her biggest opponents were Jankovic and Radwanska among most active players..

@Dino Mijatovic I like Pete more than Federer, but he was not better. The fact that he only won 1 title in his career on clay and made just one SF at RG is a testament to this. Federer also competed against two other all time greats in Nadal and Djokovic both of whom are superior to anyone Sampras faced in his career. I’ll give you that Sampras didn’t have the knowledge of hindsight that the Big 3 currently have, but his game on clay is still a huge liability in his overall legacy. He is definitely an all time great, but still a tier below Laver and the Big 3 IMO. As for Serena and Graf, they are pretty even. Graf was more dominant and consistent, but Serena had the better longevity and played in a tougher era. Steffi did come up against Navratilova, Evert and Seles, but Navratilova and Evert were past their peak and Seles was attacked and then suffered from an eating disorder. And Serena at her absolute peak can reach a level no other woman in history was able to produce. I’d say Steffi would win on clay, Serena on hard courts and they would be about even on grass.

@Regulus Arcturus As I said, numbers don't fall in the first place to me in discussion about the g.o.a.t..Regardless of all those numbers, stats and records, Sampras was better to me than Federer.. He appeared in era of already the greatest players, developed new style and made tennis even more progressive and modern..He was very consistent considering much different circumstances such as havier balls, racquets and faster courts or more numerous, diverse, fearless and talented opposition..you cannot see these circmustances in RF era..plus Pete never got shaky or undone when facing a "tough" opposition which is an advocate of his stronger technical, tactical and mental abilities..he was, if uninjured, very single minded and incredibly focused when playing..his style of game is so unique, brilliant and NEW, a combination of various DIFFERENT old school approaches and techniques combined with unprecedented precision, athleticism, power and speed for that time..RF was influenced by Pete but never transitioned and flourished completely as he was happy winning games for a long period of time with forehand, serve, volley and a dropshot here and there..Sampras had all shots and was not wobling playing shaky backhands if Agassi was pressing him to play backhands..at the end of story, regardless of numbers, Pete and Steffi are better to me than Federer and Serena, respectively.

Sampras was not better than Federer. He never even made it to the SF of all 4 majors in the same year while Federer achieved that for 5 consecutive seasons. Sampras was also never as consistent nor as dominant as Federer.

I seem to recall an interview with Steffi where she said that she chose to use the slice backhand as her rally shot over the topspin one-hander later in her career. Only when attempting a passing shot would she employ the backhand drive (seen in this match a couple of times).

Players gets much better as years pass. And after 20 years there will be a better player than Serena Williams but now she is the GOAT. PERIOD. Graf won 22 slams because the competition was so little compared to today's. ACCEPT IT OR NOT THIS IS THE TRUTH. I'M SORRY

Why do you come to a Steffi video and bash her only and victimize her for something she had no hand in doing? Isn’t Arantxa lucky that the Banshee got stabbed? Because of the stabbing Arantxa won a 2nd FO, and won her maiden US. Arantxa was also the highest money earner in 1994. Arantxa made good ground and momentum in 1994 to become no. 1 for the first time in her life in early 1995 - wasn’t she lucky? She was the first Spaniard ever to achieve this. Why didn’t you acknowledge that fact? Isn’t Pierce lucky? She reached her first major final at the 94 FO. She won her first ever major at the AO in 95 during the witch’s absence. What about Martinez? Because yellow teeth got stabbed she managed to squeeze her only major of her career. Wasn’t Martina lucky too?? A 38 year old granny reached the final. Isn’t Sukova lucky? She reached a second major final at the US in 93. Isn’t MJF lucky? She reached a 2nd major final at the 93 FO. Isn’t Novotna lucky? She reached her 2nd major final at Wim 93. Are you just targeting Steffi because you’re a bitter moron? That you’ll ignore everything else?

Before the stabbing Steffi already had 11 slams (by luck) and after the stabbing she won 11 more (by luck as well) why would anyone think she couldn’t win 11 even with the banshee around? Are you a prophet to predict that?

    4. Mark9208 P

Of course you’re right. Steffi never lifted a finger and never broke a sweat. No effort on her part; Steffi just skipped along on the court and blew kisses at the crowd hehehehehe She put in ZERO effort. All her opponents were either stabbed, on a wheelchair, couldn’t serve, was injured, an amateur, played with a wooden racket, fat, old, slow, stupid, ugly, a beginner, Peter Graf in disguise, Heidi Graf in disguise, Michael Graf in disguise, Pavel Slozil in disguise and Renee Stubbs disguising as Arantxa. Steffi just sat around wishing her way to wins. She also paid the WTA to make her no. 1 and paid the Koreans to make her an Olympic gold medalist. She recommended Pavel to Jennifer so that Pavel could destroy Capriati’s game so that she could only win once against Steffi. Hmmmmm let’s see what else......Steffi had no backhand and her forehand was hit late and it was a low quality shot. Steffi often tossed her ball too high hence an ineffective serve was produced. She had no caliber and was lucky to be ranked no. 1 for 377 weeks because everyone else was injured and did not play tennis for that 377 weeks. She was the only player present in the 107 tournaments she won hence the WTA had to hand her the victories.

Yes that slice was a beauty with velocity when she was on her A game. Her backhand always sliced Hingis' spirit when they met. Even though Hingis was a brat I have a soft spot for her as she was my age peer and I had only started following tennis in 95. I remember watching Graf play back in those days, didn't matter if her opponent was up a break in the third, you always felt she could kick it up another gear when needed.

Those were the days. Women's tennis was much more fun to watch (even more so than men's tennis in my opinion). This rivalry made me a tennis fan when I was a kid. Then followed Hingis domination, which was a delight to watch as well. After that, ball-bashing became the norm and killed it for me unfortunately..

Brilliant tennis, all kinds of shots, volleys, slices, lobs and the drama too. I wish more of the modern players played a one handed backhand, only the men seem to use it. Arantxa had one of the best defenses I've seen, very underrated player, she was a great player too.

I do not agree that the French public destroyed Arantxa and was sick against her. I watched this match several times. The applause after the successful actions of Steffi and Aranta is about the same throughout the game. The names of Steffi and Arantxa sound about the same throughout the game. The feeling that the crowd was rooting for Steffi was created only when the score was 7-8. It is logical that her fans became very active when Steffi again played the serve for the match. I'm sure if Arantxa played matchballs and came out ahead, we would only hear her fans. But Arantxa had a certain inferiority complex in relation to Steffi, who for several years in a row left her second and did not allow her to become the main queen. Arantxa really wanted more attention. These complexes made her think that the crowd was against her. This led to defeat and such a heartbreaking cry after the game.

@Peter Zhou This is so true. Vicario was very good at nullifying Graf's usual rhythm off the ground, so it forced Graf to have to use more angles, more topspin, dropshots and play more aggressively at the net than usual.

But her fitness alone would have not earn her the win here. The reason Sanchez was one of Graf's best rivals (I would place ahead of Seles or Sabatini and only second to Navratilova) was not necessarily the H2H but actually the diversity of play both were forced to employ all the time. Graf was constantly pushed to use other tactics to stay ahead.

I’ve never understood why this match always seems to be overlooked when people talk about epic grand slam finals. It’s superb! Also the Graf-Sanchez rivalry has never been given much recognition. Not like Graf-Seles or Graf-Navratilova. Again don’t understand. This match, 1989 French Open Final and 1995 Wimbledon Final are probably the highlights.

Well there was not much off the court beef between the two players. Venus versus Hingis was another rivalry totally under the radar in comparison to the so called Serena Sharapova one... That being said Graf vs. Sanchez was probably the most fun of all of them. There was not really that much chemistry between Graf-Seles or Sabatini. Graf vs. Navratilova was great though.

Arantxa was not the same player after this. But her 1996 season was already shaky by this point, losing to Likhovtseva, Habsudova, Coetzer, and Maleeva prior to this one. Of course the crowd did not help at this time when Spanish players were despised upon in FO in general. This lack of support basically lasted till the match against Serena in 98' when Arantxa turned things, as well as crowd popularity, around. But little would we know this would be Graf's last good year too. Except a surprise win in 98' and 99' for each player, respectively.

@Mr Black Graf would have every chance of winning a stack of Majors in today's tennis. She had a brilliant all court attacking game and only Barty, of today's players, can volley anywhere near as well as Graf could. She had just about the best forehand I've seen in women's tennis, was superbly athletic and had so much variety and mixed he game up brilliantly. She would take today's baseliners out of their comfort zone by coming at them in the forecourt, where she was so brilliant, and causing the kinds of problems today's baseliners aren't used to facing.Mauresmo showed what could be done by playing from the forecourt in modern tennis, but she was fragile mentally whereas Graf wasn't.

@marty dav it dosent care. in Todays Tennis Graf cant Play only Slice on the Backhandside and win Slams. Today the Courts are different and the Players are more offensive and can better react to a Slice. Nobody plays on the Backhandside just Slice and thats for Reason. Not even Roger Federer and he had one of the best Slices ever. Today is a Slice just a devensive shot or a option to make the Tempo in the Rallys slower. But nobody plays a Slice permanent like a Groundstroke how Steffi did. And Ken would not win an Single Game in todays Tennis. Earlier they played with Woodenracquets and the Courts were faster and a Slice was more effectiv. But Time has Changed.

Thank you for giving tennis fans such a high quality video of the 1996 French Open final! Incredible match between the great Steffi Graf vs. the tenacious Arantxa Sanchez Vicario. Both amazing fighters. Steffi with her legendary iconic forehand and Arantxa with her outstanding retrieval skills. This was Steffi’s 5th FO 🏆 and her 19th grand slam win at that point in time!!! For Steffi, her all-court power game was just a sight to behold which was complemented with her speed and athleticism, fierce mental fortitude, and graceful shotmaking. She is the most versatile tennis player that dominated across all surfaces (winning 4 or more slams on clay, grass, hardcourts, outdoor or indoor). I also love the still picture of Steffi’s best ever backhand slice used in the video. Great example of how gracefully balletic yet athletically powerful Steffi was... an extremely rare combination. Roger Federer is the only tennis athlete that has uncanny similarities with Steffi. When Roger retires, will we ever see another tennis player like Steffi or Roger? Time will tell ...

@Gavin Johnson Another indicator how amazing Steffi and Roger both are is how fluid they look when hitting a difficult and awkward shot. For Steffi, a really good example starts at 5:55 especially during the slow motion moment at the net. Graceful execution for a very athletically powerful player. There are so many tennis greats of today that when you see them respond to a difficult shot from their opponent, it just looks so awkward. They may win the point but either their arms are flailing around, legs stumbling to almost tripping, etc. plus the grunting/shouting makes their shotmaking image look worse. Steffi and Roger are the most balanced tennis athletes ever so as tennis players in this era opted for more power, they lost that balanced combination of athletic and fluid execution. Still nice to watch current tennis players compete just hoping for the next Steffi! I do hope Roger stays with us fans for 1-2 more years.
