Some people often forget/are not aware how great some tennis players were before The Big Three. It's almost as if only The Big Three know how to play first-class tennis. Gustavo Kuerten was on the same level as any of the Big Three, on their best days.

@G FFA which is completely different from what big 3 level means. Occasionally beating them is indeed good but winning 15+ slams is a whole other story

@matteo g Guga beat Sampras and Agassi on HARD COURTS at the same tournament...and Federer on clay easily, and won RG 3 times, the hardest slam to win, so yeah, he is on their level...Just see the respect they have for him, The Djoker even drew a heart on the court to celebrate him on his only FO win.

To add, and Guga was the first glimpse of what we nowadays take as a default for what a modern tennis player looks like: tall, lanky, flexible, skillful, intelligent. Muster was some kind of a transition period aggressive ball striker who lacked in the classical department of touch and skills as well as in the really modern ball striking dynamics. His one-handed backhand is old-school as well as his footwork is one-dimensional and unoptimal while Kuerten has the first bona fide modern 1HBH in the game and a Fed like footwork. Some Pete Sampras should have taken notes and learn from this great Brazilian!

As much as I loved watching Muster at the time, he was making awful choices in this match. He spent many entire rallies hitting the ball directly back to Kuerten, yet Kuerten was making him constantly run from side to side.

Nadal volleys a million times better than what Muster used to, has a more powerful forehand, wasn't a natural lefty which is why his backhand can flick winners when stretched, knows when to come forward, and uses the entire court better than Muster.

One of Muster's problems, in my opinion, is that he gave his opponents too much pace. It made him look powerful, but the opponent could often use Muster's pace against him - as Guga did here. That's why varying pace works.

By 1997, he was all but wash out, with exception of early season hard court (which included a win in Key Biscayne, the same place where his career (if not life) almost ended. Muster's problem was that he used newer racquet which, as I mentioned improve his game on hard court, but at the same time, made him lesser on clay.

@Tao Paille-Paille Muster won 40 titles on clay (and only 4 on all other surfaces combined) which is the third highest of all time. He was past his peak here. He wasn't a great clay court player in 97.

@Tao Paille-Paille Muster is a clay court legend, don't get me wrong. But he was more effective on hard courts in '97 and appeared to regress on clay.

Seems like Muster uses hard court tennis game on clay. wonder why he won roland garros and not other slams. but his game against kuerten was not that bad. In the same vein you have Del potro federer rg 09 semi finals match where the least powerful player won.

@Taylor Pack That's an oversimplification, clay is just more demanding because it requires more than one good shot to win the point, on clay power alone is getting you nowhere, you have to construct the point and be consistent, even if you have a powerful game. Remind you that Muster won 41 clay court titles, and he didn't lack power nor aggressiveness.

@Kelveron Yeah, but post prime and already with the rip injury Guga defeated Federer in straight sets at RG 2004, when Roger was already in his prime years. If prime Djokovic lost to Wawrinka, Guga could have beaten him too, i'm pretty sure. Guga was insane on clay and he could give Nadal a lot of trouble because he could take his monstrous backhand on the rise without any trouble and would suffer less from Nadal's extreme forehand spin. But problably Nadal would still win more in the H2H, because he is the king of clay.

Maybe, maybe not. I like Guga, great player and a nice guy, but Guga didn't have to deal with some one called Nadal in most of his clay tournament career. If he did, it is unlikely he would have had as much success on clay. Likewise, if it were not for Nadal, Federer and Djokovic would have had more success on clay
