Saudades desse backhand 🇧🇷!
Funny how both guys were using the Head Prestige.
Kuerten was no less than a rock star
Lost a lot of respect for Guga in this match - Russell was so sporting in how he conducted himself, often applauding Guga's great shots, but Guga just sulked like a spoiled brat when he was losing and never applauded any of Russell's good shots.
Wooooooww
What an outstanding performance from both!
Guga prime vs nadal prime at rg , I think rafa would have beaten him in straight sets very easy
Damn, see that effort by Russell on the last point
Man...Russel gets to every ball! It is annoying as hell when people do that against you in a match but I'm so glad Guga pulled through. Great tennis.
the americans tend to be involved in many of the biggest throws in tennis history lol. sandgren and blake are a few off the top of my head that were in the same scenario
Only true champions can do this!!
Thanks for the summary of this classic match. I ask Roland Garros and the French Tennis Federation to post this full match in one of their KZauto channels. Thanks.
Agassi and Russel were the only American players with a proper backhand. The only ones!
Hmm Sampras maybe ?
Unfortunately, Guga has never reached his full potential, at the end of 2001 he started with a chronic hip injury which made him forfeit tournaments and decrease performance over the next years. In 2004 he attempted a last try doing a hip surgery (similar to Andy Murray surgery), but he could not never recover his old level of 99-00-01. Officially Guga retired in 2008 after a second surgery in the hips, but in fact, 2001 was his last year playing healthy.
Beautiful match, Guga with the strong backhand did not give a chance in the final sets of the match.
Rafa would destroy both
Guga was so fun to watch. I love his one handed backhand, it is an absolute thing of beauty. What a great comeback!
It was Kuertens for Russell after the 3rd set comeback!
has anybody else been waiting years for this match to be uploaded in decent quality and with a scoreboard?
Glorious True Warrior
This is gold. Thank you so much Roland Garros! Please upload a video featuring Kuerten's best backhands 🤝😌
Far more entertaining than the 2020 french final.
The 2020 was played at an incredibly high level abd there were some incredible rallies, idk how that is not entertaining

3rd best clay court player ever
Total Package: 1) Nadal 2) Borg Thats for sure. But Prime for Prime, i am not sure if Borg really would beat Kuerten. Yes Borg von the FO 6 times, but remember Kuerten won it 3 times at the age of 20, 23 and 24, and shortly after his 25th birthday he had a hip injury and never recovered from it, at least not for Best of 5 tournaments. If Guga would have been fit until 2005, i am very sure he would have done well in the FO 2002, 2003 and 2004. He had Ferrero´s number (winner 2003), and guys like A. Costa (winner 2002) and Gaudio (winner 2004) would not be the favorite against him. So Kuerten could also have won the FO 6 times. And Prime for Prime i would say he would be the best opponent Nadal would ever faced, better then Federer, Djokovic, Wawrinka, Thiem, Söderling, Puerta, Ferrer, etc.
Guga showed his heart during the match and afterwards. Beautiful.
Epic match!!!
love this intro 😍😍😍😍
Never give up!
Few to know this but that was the first heart drawing before the famous one at the final. It's so emotional even after so many years. Talk about a player with huge character and personality!
by all accounts, a wonderful human being and a pretty darn good tennis player.
Emocionantes jogo e comemoração. Momento memorável.
The other Iron Mike
What a match, most amazing crownd reaction that I ever seem on the last point. Beautifull conection between Guga and the French open!! Guga forever!!
Please share Wilander-Zivojinovic from 1988. Thank you.
What a comeback
Guga Kuerten gigante!!!! Essa foi na raça... Acreditar até o final!!! Lição
I know who won, but my heart is pounding watching Guga with a matchpoint down. Great match!
guga
14:08 the djokovic gene
You just know this is about to go down with that opening music.
Thiem vs Schwartzman please!
c est fou cette balle de match a 14 mn18 . et finalement tu perds .. .. c est la que tu te dis a quoi ca tient la vie?? ... a 1 point ! ... la victoire... la carriere ... l argent ...c est dingue ... et michael russell on n en a jamais entendu parler aprés... alors qu il faisait un exploit monumental il etait 120eme mondial c hallucinant
Guga 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
14:17 o ponto do título
14:38 a bola do título
I would have loved to see peak nadal against peak Gustavo. not sure the spaniard would won so easily given the sheer quality of kuerten tennis.
@Pedro Dipp I totally disagree..seeing Bruguera winning FO twice you can conclude that was an weak era...Bruguera would probably los to Nadal 1 11 in three sets
@matteo g Well, but you named only 3 players, which 2 were past their prime by a long time, especially Moya. Ferrer was good, not great, he cant be compared to the names i quoted by any strech of imagination. Dont get me wrong, Roger and Novak (i agree with Roger as top 10 all time, not Novak) are great, but not on clay, only 1 title each, against Murray (ok thats a challange) and Soderling (so weak). I mean, its all conjecture at this point but i still think my theory is the closest of the truth. Anyway tks for you input.
@Pedro Dipp nadal played against moya, coria, ferrer and a bunch of other great clay specialists. Federer and djokovic are still top 10 clay players ever, idk how they are not great. Nadal facing a bunch of weak competition is just a ridicoulus excuse given the huge amount of great players he played against
@Pedro Dipp I just think with those physical characteristics, you'll beat anybody. Imo, Sampras is the GOAT. I think Pete won the first two matches and Guga won the third. All three matches were on hard court. Imagine if they were on clay?
@Kevin Porter Totally agree, Guga had the power to outplay a counter puncher like Nadal and his backhand was near perfect (one of the best one hander ever imo), making the game against a lefty at least a bit less harder.
One of the greatest comebacks of all time without a doubt Feel sorry for Russell For the first 3 sets he played the best tennis of his life
What a great clay court match (war) that was!
Melhor tênista q já existiu 😍😍
Ahhh thanks for the Guga matches! ❤️🇧🇷
Epic match. Epic moments
All are shit players in front of Rafa Nadal
Foi dps desse jogo que o Guga criou confiança pra ser tricampeão de Roland Garros
